popijininsky makes music

and sometimes other things

made in oakland . heard worldwide

popijininsky is a music production project, the solo effort of Sal Bednarz, a longtime musician, engineer and producer living in Oakland. The popijininsky project is an eclectic collection of moods and genres, made alone and with a cast of collaborators. popijininsky treads in the footsteps of genre-benders like Frank Zappa, Ween, Brian Eno, David Bowie, David Byrne, and so many more. Influences range from punk rock to bebop, ska to dub and jungle, breakbeat, hip hop, and loud and messy music from the furthest reaches of the musical universe.

I’m writing about about creativity in a series of blog posts, interviewing independent producers from around the world and talking about why they make music and other things. I started this project because I was trying to unpack my own creative motivations, and to find a production process that keeps me super energized and always wanting to do more.

I wasn’t seeing this sort of conversation anywhere else, and so I started my own. These interviews help me understand more about the nature of creativity, and how it works very differently for different folks. I hope these conversations help other creative people reflect on their own process.

LOHM makes great music, and is a prolific collaborator, who has learned to trust his intuition in his creativity.

Camoragi is seeking her own identity as a human and an artist, and moved halfway across the world to find it.

Barrabas T. Jones, aka Trex, makes folk punk and aspires to be a songwriter among great songwriters.

Atlantic Canyons processes her emotions for her music, and works to make a safe online space for women producers.

Coyoti can’t stop creating, and isn’t afraid to explore new ideas, musically, visually, and psychically.

Simms makes some of the most upbeat music I’ve ever heard, and he wants to put you in a Good Ass Mood.

Piglet Porch busks and housesits his way across central Europe, with an aim to build a musical community in rural France.

Bug is a prickly iconoclast with a delicious soft center. His restless and wide-ranging creative efforts help him connect to his people.

All these pieces are hosted on the Indie Music Feedback blog. IMF is an online community of producers and music makers from around the world, and it’s pretty darn special. If you make music at any skill and experience level, I encourage you to check out the IMF Discord. You might find, like I did, that it was the community you didn’t know you needed until you found it.

popijininsky supports Indie for a Cause

Indie for a Cause is recurring compilation - a fundraiser for rotating causes selected by the community of artists who contribute their music to the project.

I did a DJ mix for IFAC Volume 3, which includes a taste of a new mini-project that might turn into something more - spoken word vignettes from creators who I asked to share an idea, a memory, or a dream that inspires their creative work.

This volume supports The Trevor Project and Seattle Counseling Service, two organizations working to prevent suicide and provide mental health support in the LGBTQ community.

Stream the DJ mix on Bandcamp, and if you’re inclined, make a donation to support the causes that inspired these creators to give their hard-won musical gems to the project.
